The Gainesville Leopards cross country team will be advancing to the Class 3A Region II meet in Arlington after a third-place finish at the District 9-3A meet Thursday in Denton.
Runners had to run in less than ideal conditions, with steady rain and cold temperatures. But the Leopards still finished third as a team behind Argyle and Sanger, both ranked in the Top 3 in the state. Argyle won the meet with 27 points, Sanger was second with 28 and Gainesville was third with 84.
For the Leopards, Giovanni Carranza placed 11th (17:27), Everardo Puente was 15th (17:51), Richard Bean was 17th (18:31), Cale Kennedy was 19th (18:34), Chris Govea was 22nd (18:48), Ervin Bean was 29th (19:20) and Michael Sanchez was 34th (19:48).
In the junior varsity division, Gainesville finished second as a team with 56 points. Sanger was the top JV team with 18 points.
For the Leopards, Terry Hall was 6th (19:53), Mitchell Case was 8th (20:06), Charlie Kirk was 10th (20:17), Alain Ruvacaba was 11th (20:26), Jacob Goldsworthy was 21st (21:26), Hunter Goldsworthy was 22nd (21:41) and Jose Ortiz was 28th (22:18). Also running were Ricardo Mendez (24:51) and Keeton Kiser (27:23).
